Azpilicueta makes this white Rioja from Viura, the region’s main white grape, grown for low alcohol and steady acidity. Fermented in stainless steel and given three months in oak, it shows lemon, green apple and pear over a fresh, gently rounded finish.

Description
Azpilicueta is based in Logroño in the north of Rioja, and this white is made entirely from Viura, the most widely planted white variety in the region. The estate selects fruit for low alcohol and balanced acidity, which sets the tone for a fresh, easy style at 12.5 percent. Winemaking is deliberately straightforward: fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel to keep the primary fruit clean, followed by a short three months in oak barrels that adds a little breadth rather than obvious wood. Viura is a fairly neutral grape, so this restraint lets its orchard-fruit and citrus character come through. The wine is pale lemon in colour. The nose is bright, with lemon, green apple and pear and a touch of white flowers. The palate is dry and crisp, with the brief oak ageing giving a rounder texture through the middle before a clean, refreshing close. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
