Description
Azores Wine Company Vulcánico Branco is a white blend of Arinto and Verdelho grown under the GI Azores in the mid-Atlantic islands of Portugal. The vines are rooted in dark volcanic soil, which drains freely and warms quickly, while the constant Atlantic wind and cool ocean influence keep the fruit fresh and hold its acidity. Both grapes are naturally high in acid, and Arinto in particular is prized for its citrus drive and mineral cut. The fruit is picked by hand into 20 kilogram baskets and carefully sorted at the winery, then gently crushed and held for three to six hours at low temperature before pressing. Fermentation begins spontaneously with the wild yeasts on the fruit, which preserves the site character, and the wine is then aged on its lees to broaden the texture and add a subtle savoury depth without masking the salinity. It pours pale lemon with a green tint. The nose is bright and saline, with lemon, green apple and a distinct sea-salt and briny note over white flowers. The palate is bone dry and taut, the sharp acidity driving a mineral, salty finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
