Description
Azores Wine Company makes this single variety Verdelho in the IG Azores, a volcanic archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic. The bunches are selected and picked by hand into 20 kilogram baskets, pressed whole soon after arriving at the winery, then moved after 24 hours into fermentation vats of 600 to 1000 litres. The islands' volcanic setting defines the wine: the black basalt soils and the constant influence of the surrounding ocean give a pronounced saline, mineral character, while the cool, windy maritime climate holds the acidity firm and keeps alcohol moderate at 12.5 per cent. Whole bunch pressing is gentle and limits harsh extraction, and ageing on the lees builds texture and a subtle depth without oak. The colour is pale with green glints. The nose shows lemon, green apple and citrus peel over white flowers, with a clear sea salt and briny lift. The palate is dry, taut and salty, the acidity bright, the finish long and stony. Serve well chilled at 9 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass.
