Azores Wine Company makes Proibida from Isabela and old-vine local varieties on volcanic island soils. A light, low-alcohol red with bright red fruit and a saline, mineral edge from the Atlantic.
Description
Proibida is a light red from the Azores, made by the Azores Wine Company from Isabela, Vidueño and a field blend of old local varieties under the Vinho Regional Azoreano appellation. The vines grow on the volcanic mid-Atlantic islands, where dark basalt soils and constant ocean influence give the wine its saline, mineral signature. The cool, humid maritime climate and the late, hardy Isabela grape keep alcohol low at around 11 percent and acidity high, producing a fresh, easy style rather than a heavy one. The wine is made young, without oak, to show its bright fruit and sea-air character; Isabela also carries the historic story of the vines that survived phylloxera here in the nineteenth century. The colour is light ruby. The nose shows red berries, cherry and red currant with a clear briny, earthy note. The palate is light bodied and fresh, with low tannin, crisp acidity and a saline, savoury finish. This is a red that can be served lightly chilled. Serve at 14 degrees. It suits grilled fish, pork and salads.
