Description
Azienda Agricola Camparo makes this Langhe red in Piedmont from the region's three traditional red grapes: Nebbiolo for structure and perfume, Barbera for acidity and dark fruit, and Dolcetto for soft, round berry fruit. The Langhe hills are built on calcareous marl, and these soils, combined with a continental climate of warm days and cool nights, give reds that are aromatic and firmly acidic. The wine is matured for two years across three vessels: twelve months in French oak barrels, six months in stainless steel and six months in bottle. The steel preserves freshness and fruit, the oak softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a light spice, and the bottle time knits the parts together. The colour is medium garnet. The nose is savoury, with red cherry, wild berries and plum over dried herbs, pepper and damp earth. The palate is medium bodied, with bright acidity, a firm grainy tannin from the Nebbiolo and an earthy, gently oaked finish. Serve it at 16 to 17 degrees in a medium glass. It is a versatile table red for meat, pasta and mushrooms.
