Ayrshire is the pseudonym independent bottlers use for Ladyburn, since they cannot use the distillery name. Gordon & MacPhail bottled this 1970 as a 30 year old Rare Old, an early vintage from one of the rarest ghost distilleries. Ladyburn ran just nine years inside the Girvan grain complex on the Ayrshire coast, from 1966 to 1975.

Ladyburn amounted to four pot stills in the Girvan complex, its spirit made for Grant's blends rather than for bottling alone. Thirty years in a quiet ex-Bourbon cask turned the oily spirit waxy and deep, vanilla and old oak to the fore.

Bottled at 40%. The ex-Bourbon cask gives vanilla and coconut from vanillin and oak lactones, with a maltol toffee edge. The recorded notes run to fresh fruit, a malt extract note and new wood over an oily depth. An early-vintage Ayrshire from a respected independent.
