Description
Avignonesi is a well known estate in Tuscany, owned since 2009 by Virginie Saverys and farmed organically. This rosé is made from Sangiovese, the region's signature grape, drawn from the prized Capezzine vineyard. Tuscany's warm days and cool nights give Sangiovese its hallmark high acidity and red fruit, and the grape's relatively pale skins suit a structured rosé. The fruit is pressed with brief skin contact for colour and the wine is aged eight months in oak barrels. Time in wood on the lees softens the wine's edges, adds a creamy texture and light spice, and the slow oxygen exchange through the barrel gives breadth while keeping the bright Sangiovese acidity intact. The wine is organic and vegan. The colour is a coppery pink. The nose shows red cherry, redcurrant and a dried herb note typical of Sangiovese, with a vanilla edge from the oak. The palate is dry and structured for a rosé, the fresh acidity and a faint savoury grip carrying a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass.
