Avancia make this Godello in Valdeorras from old vines averaging forty years on chalk and granite at 500 metres. Fermented and aged seven months in large French oak, it balances ripe stone fruit with a green herb lift and a mineral edge.
Description
Avancia Godello comes from Valdeorras, the inland Galician appellation, and is made by Avancia, part of the Jorge Ordóñez group. It is a varietal Godello from old vineyards averaging forty years of age, planted on sloping sites at around 500 metres. The soils are mostly chalk and granite, which give the wine a clear mineral character and good drainage, while the altitude and slope bring cool nights and a wide day to night temperature swing that preserves acidity and aromatic detail in a warmer inland setting. Old vines carry low yields of concentrated fruit. The wine is aged for seven months in large 500 litre French oak barrels, a format whose lower ratio of wood to wine gives slow, gentle oxygenation and texture without a strong oak flavour. The colour is bright straw. The nose marries freshness and depth, with ripe nectarine and pear alongside dill and green herbs and a faint mineral, earthy note. The palate is medium bodied and balanced, with stone fruit, a savoury herbal edge and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. It suits richer fish and poultry dishes.
