Alta Alella farms the granitic hills of D.O. Alella, on the Mediterranean coast just north of Barcelona, a family project run by Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets and Cristina Guillen committed to native varieties and low-intervention farming. AUS Merla is made from Mataró, the local name for Monastrell, in a natural, vegan style. The vineyards grow on sauló, a pale decomposed-granite soil that drains fast and reflects light, ripening the late variety while the sea breeze and coastal nights keep the fruit fresh. Winemaking is deliberately restrained: the wine sees only three months in oak, enough to round the texture while preserving the bright primary fruit and a faint reductive grip typical of the natural approach. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows red berry and cherry with dried herbs, thyme and a peppery edge over a stony, earthy base. The palate is light to medium-bodied and juicy, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury, herbal finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It is an easy partner for grilled and casual food.
