Description
August Kesseler is regarded as one of the finest producers of the Rheingau, in Germany. He began at nineteen in a small family winery and built it into a twenty-two hectare estate in the best parts of the region, working with Riesling and Spätburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir. The Daily August is his everyday Pinot Noir. The Rheingau is a cool, northerly region where slopes along the Rhine catch extra sun and the river moderates temperatures, while cool nights hold acidity high, so the grapes ripen slowly and keep their perfume and freshness. The wine is aged in stainless steel rather than oak, an inert vessel that adds no wood flavour and preserves the pure, bright fruit, and the low 11.5 per cent alcohol keeps it light on the palate. The colour is pale ruby. The nose shows red cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry with a floral, rose-petal note. The palate is light bodied and fresh, with crisp acidity, soft, delicate tannins and a clean, red-fruited finish. Serve at 13 to 14 degrees, lightly chilled, in a wide bowled glass. It suits roast chicken and light game.
