Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 1997 as part of the Individual Cask Bottling range, drawn from cask 1005 of 1966 vintage stock at natural strength of 46.1% for the Polish market. The Individual Cask Bottling range was the distillery's first single cask programme, presenting long matured stock cask by cask from the archive at Dalmuir.
Distilled in 1966 during the Sanderson and Eadie Cairns ownership era, the wash was made from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water and fermented around 62 hours in Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks. Auchentoshan triple distils every drop through wash, intermediate, and spirit pot stills, with the third pass lifting cut to around 81% ABV. The additional copper contact and higher final strength strip sulphur compounds and heavy fusel oils while concentrating light ester compounds such as ethyl hexanoate and isoamyl acetate, leaving a delicate spirit filled into a single ex Bourbon American oak cask.
Thirty one years in cool, damp Lowland dunnage conditions delivered measured oak extraction. Vanillin from lignin breakdown gave vanilla, cis and trans oak lactones added coconut and sweet wood, and char layer interaction built furfural with Maillard derived caramelised sugars. Tertiary stage maturation drove slow ester transformation and oxidation through the staves, integrating fruit and oak at 46.1% natural strength.
