Auchentoshan Decanter 42 Years Old 1965

Released by Auchentoshan as a 42 year old decanter from 1965 vintage stock, with 123 bottles distributed to the European market in cask strength format. The decanter presentation reserves output of this age for collectors and the distillery's flagship lineage of long matured stock from the Morrison Bowmore era.

Distilled in 1965 from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water drawn from the Kilpatrick Hills, the wash was fermented for around 62 hours across Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before passing through Auchentoshan's three pot stills. Unique among Scottish distilleries in triple distilling every drop, the additional copper contact and spirit cut at around 81% ABV strips heavy sulphur compounds and fusel oils, leaving a delicate, ester forward new make filled into American oak casks for on site dunnage warehousing.

Forty two years in cool, damp Lowland conditions delivered slow, controlled oak interaction. Vanillin from lignin breakdown and cis and trans oak lactones drove vanilla and coconut development, while extended char layer contact built furfural and Maillard derived caramelised sugars. Settling at 41.3% reflects natural strength decline across four decades, with tertiary ester transformation lending a layered, polished finish to the lighter triple distilled spirit base.
