Description
Bottled by Auchentoshan in 2013 as a 38 year old ex Bourbon release from 1975 vintage stock, with 500 bottles distributed to the global travel retail market at cask strength of 45.6%. The release sits within the distillery's premium long matured tier, drawing on stock laid down during the Eadie Cairns era before Morrison Bowmore acquisition in 1984.
Distilled in 1975 from 100% unpeated malted barley with soft Lowland water from Loch Cochno, the wash was fermented around 62 hours across Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before passing through three copper pot stills. Auchentoshan triple distils every drop, with the intermediate still adding a third pass that lifts spirit cut to around 81% ABV and concentrates light esters such as ethyl hexanoate and isoamyl acetate while reducing sulphur volatiles and fusel oils. The new make was filled into American oak ex Bourbon casks for on site dunnage warehousing.
Thirty eight years in cool Lowland conditions drove deep but measured extraction from the American oak. Vanillin from lignin breakdown produced vanilla, cis and trans oak lactones added coconut and sweet wood, and char layer contact released furfural with Maillard derived caramelised sugars. At nearly four decades the tertiary stage drives ester transformation and slow oxidation through the staves, building polished, integrated complexity on the lighter triple distilled base.
