Description
Bottled by Hunter Laing in 2022 as a 31 year old release in the Old and Rare Platinum Selection, with 404 bottles of 1991 vintage Auchentoshan distributed globally at cask strength of 57.2%. Hunter Laing is an independent Glasgow bottler run by Stewart Hunter Laing, and the Old and Rare Platinum range is reserved for long matured single malts of exceptional maturity from the company's stock holdings.
Distilled in 1991 from 100% unpeated malted barley with Loch Cochno water from the Kilpatrick Hills, the wash was fermented around 62 hours in Douglas fir and stainless steel washbacks before triple distillation. Auchentoshan runs every drop through three copper pot stills, with the intermediate and spirit stages lifting cut to around 81% ABV. The increased copper contact strips sulphur compounds and fusel oils while concentrating ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, and other light esters, giving a clean, ester forward new make filled into ex Bourbon American oak.
Thirty one years in temperate maturation drove patient extraction from the American oak. Lignin breakdown released vanillin, cis and trans oak lactones built coconut and sweet wood, and char layer interaction produced furfural and Maillard caramelised sugars. Holding 57.2% after three decades reflects a slow strength decline and a tighter cask, with tertiary ester development layering polished fruit over the spirit's signature citrus and almond core.
