Description
Atlantis is a single varietal Albariño made by Maetierra from fruit in the Condado do Tea, one of the warmer, more inland subzones of Rías Baixas, set close to the Miño river that marks the Galician border with Portugal. The climate here is mild and Atlantic, with heavy rainfall the constant challenge, and the vineyards sit on sandy topsoil over a granite subsoil that drains well and lends the wine its cut and its saline edge. The grapes are picked by hand into small plastic crates to keep the bunches intact, then selected and gently pressed at the winery. Fermentation is cool in stainless steel to protect the grape's stone fruit aromatics and its bright acidity, with no oak, so the fruit and the mineral character carry the wine. It is pale lemon with green tints. The nose shows white peach, lemon and green apple over white flowers and a hint of sea salt. The palate is fresh and precise, with the firm Albariño acidity and a slightly saline, citrus finish that reflects the granite soils. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
