Artuke Pies Negros is a modern Rioja red of Tempranillo and Graciano, hand-harvested and foot-trodden, which gives the wine its name. Twelve months in oak yield juicy black fruit, ripe cherry and a fresh, savoury frame.
Description
Artuke Pies Negros 2024 is a barrel-aged Rioja from Bodegas y Vinedos Artuke, a blend led by Tempranillo with Graciano. The grapes are picked by hand and sorted on a table, then destemmed and trodden barefoot, the practice that gives the wine its name, Black Feet. Fermentation runs in stainless steel with daily punch-downs, followed by a short maceration of three to four days that draws colour and supple tannin while keeping the fruit fresh rather than extracting heavy structure. The wine then ages twelve months in French and American oak, a measured spell that lends spice and roundness without burying the fruit, with the slow oxygen exchange through the wood softening the tannins. Graciano contributes aromatic lift, deep colour and a bright acid line that suits the modern, fresher style. The result combines depth with freshness: juicy black fruit, ripe cherry and plum on the nose, a peppery and herbal edge, and a savoury, earthy palate with vanilla from the oak. Tannins are fine grained and the finish is clean and lively. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with grilled lamb, roast pork or mushroom dishes.
