Description
Artigas Blanc is made by Bodegas Mas Alta in the Priorat, blending Garnacha Blanca with Macabeo and a portion of Pedro Ximénez. The vines grow on the region's licorella slate, the fractured stone that forces roots deep and gives Priorat wines their firm mineral core, while the warm, dry climate ripens the fruit fully, seen here in the wine's 14.5 percent alcohol. What sets this white apart is the cellar work: the must is fermented in new French oak barrels rather than tank, then aged three months on its lees in the same wood. Fermenting in barrel integrates the oak more completely than ageing a finished wine, while the lees contact releases mannoproteins that build a creamy, rounded texture and add savoury depth. New oak contributes vanilla, spice and a toasted note through slow oxygen exchange. The colour is bright gold. The nose shows white peach and pear lifted by vanilla, toasted bread and a honeyed richness, with a bitter almond note from the Macabeo. The palate is dry, full and textured, the barrel weight held in balance by slate minerality and firm acidity, closing long and savoury. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees in a broad glass.

Additional information
Its richness and oak weight suit roast chicken, baked white fish in a butter or cream sauce, and grilled pork. The savoury, nutty character also pairs well with aged hard cheeses such as Manchego and Gruyère.
