Borja Pérez makes Artífice Vidueños on Tenerife from old Canary varieties, Albillo, Gual, Marmajuelo and Listán Blanca, on volcanic ash and rock. Fermented and aged eight months on lees in barrel, it is mineral and saline, with white peach, citrus and a smoky volcanic edge.
Description
Artífice Vidueños Blanco is made by Borja Pérez in the D.O. Ycoden-Daute-Isora, on the northern side of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. It is a field blend of local grapes, Albillo, Gual, Marmajuelo and Listán Blanca, varieties largely unique to the islands and grown on ungrafted vines, as the volcanic soils were never reached by phylloxera. Those soils, made of black ash and rock, drain sharply and impart a smoky, mineral character, while the Atlantic sits close by and moderates the climate with sea breezes and humidity. The grapes are fermented and then aged for eight months on their lees in barrel, which builds texture and a subtle savoury depth while the used wood adds structure rather than obvious oak flavour. The colour is bright straw. The nose is mineral and saline, with white peach, citrus, herbs and a smoky, almost flinty volcanic note. The palate is fresh and taut, dry, with real cut and a stony, saline finish that reflects the site. This is a distinctive Atlantic white with a clear sense of place. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white glass. It suits grilled fish, seafood rice and lighter poultry. Organic.
