Description
The Robert Burns Single Malt is bottled by Isle of Arran Distillers under official licence from the World Burns Federation, the international body promoting the legacy of Scotland's national poet. The licence makes it the only single malt officially endorsed by the Federation, and the bottle features a portrait of Burns and lines from his work. The expression sits alongside the Robert Burns Blend, both released to commemorate the poet who was born in Alloway in Ayrshire in 1759 and who knew the Arran coast from his time travelling and farming in the west of Scotland.
The expression is bottled at 43%, slightly below the 46% of the standard core range, to produce a more approachable profile suited to the wide commemorative audience the release is aimed at. The cask construction combines ex Bourbon and sherry casks in proportions tuned to give a balanced and accessible profile rather than emphasising one cask style over the other. No chill filtration and no added colour.
At 43% the spirit retains most of the fatty acid ester load that drives the Arran textural signature without the additional concentration of the 46% core expressions. The ex Bourbon component contributes vanillin, whisky lactones and the coconut notes characteristic of American oak. The sherry portion adds gentle dried fruit and a small amount of furfural and syringaldehyde from European oak. The result is the Arran house profile delivered at a slightly softer presentation.
