Japan represents one of the most discerning whisky retail markets globally, and Arran has worked with Japanese specialist retailers on Private Cask bottlings throughout the distillery's existence. This 1998 vintage release at seventeen years old draws on cask 1998/1090, an Oloroso seasoned cask matured at Lochranza through the late 1990s and 2000s. The 317 bottle outturn reflects the working yield of the cask after seventeen years.
Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 1998 and matured seventeen years in a single Oloroso seasoned cask. Bottled in 2015 at 54.6% without chill filtration and without added colour, with the 317 bottle outturn covering the full single cask working volume.
Seventeen years of Oloroso seasoned cask maturation produces deep extraction of the sherry compounds: sotolon, furfural and the oxidised polyphenol fraction developed during the original wine ageing. Combined with the underlying Arran spirit signature from the 1998 distillation year, the cask interaction develops dark sherry, dried fig and dark chocolate notes layered against the residual citric character that the spirit retains through long maturation.
