Description
Most Private Cask releases bottle at natural cask strength to preserve the maximum textural and flavour intensity of the single cask. Reduced strength bottlings like this 48% release reflect specific cask owner choices, often tied to making the whisky more accessible for the event audience the bottling targets. Cask 2001/872 was a sister cask to SC66364 (2001/869 at 56%), with both casks from the same 2001 production period but treated differently by their respective cask owners.
Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 2001 and matured thirteen years in a single ex Bourbon American oak cask. Bottled in 2015 at 48% through controlled reduction from the natural cask strength, without chill filtration and without added colour. The 235 bottle outturn at the reduced strength is slightly larger than the natural cask working volume would deliver, consistent with the dilution involved in strength reduction.
At 48% the long chain fatty acid esters remain in solution without filtration, preserving the textural weight that lower strength bottlings would require filtration to maintain. Thirteen years of ex Bourbon maturation supplies vanillin, whisky lactones and the toasted sugar layer from American oak, with the underlying Arran citric, fresh fruit, honey and hay note signature remaining the dominant flavour driver.
