Arran Private Cask 10 Years Old 2004

The Arran Private Cask programme includes bottlings from a range of cask formats: barrels (around 200 litres), hogsheads (250 litres), and butts (500 litres). The 408 bottle outturn from cask 2004/012 at the ten year point suggests this was an Oloroso seasoned butt rather than the more common hogshead format, with the larger cask volume supporting the higher outturn even after a decade of cask evaporation. The bottling for the French market was managed through the Private Cask scheme's working relationships with French specialist retailers.

Spirit was distilled at Lochranza in 2004 and matured ten years in a single Oloroso seasoned cask, likely a butt format based on the 408 bottle outturn. Bottled in 2015 at the reduced strength of 46% without chill filtration and without added colour, with the 46% strength reflecting controlled reduction from the natural cask strength.

Ten years of Oloroso cask maturation produces measured sherry compound integration, with sotolon, furfural and the polyphenol fraction from the wine ageing developing alongside the underlying Arran spirit signature. The 46% bottling strength sits at the threshold above which chill filtration becomes unnecessary, preserving the long chain fatty acid esters in solution. Larger format casks like butts produce slightly slower extraction kinetics than smaller hogsheads given the lower surface area to volume ratio.
