Description
Brandy Cask releases from Arran in the mid 2000s formed part of the distillery's wider cask finishing exploration during a period when the still young production needed differentiation through cask choice. The releases were not formally tracked as a numbered series, with Whiskybase cataloguing them as individual SKUs reflecting batch variation rather than a defined editioning programme. The cask source variation across batches drove subtle but real differences in the resulting whisky.
Primary maturation runs in first fill ex Bourbon American oak barrels at Lochranza. The secondary brandy cask phase was conducted over a defined finishing window before bottling, with the duration adjusted to produce the desired profile from the available cask stock. Bottled at 59% with no chill filtration and no added colour.
The defining feature of brandy cask finishing is the residue left behind by long aged grape spirit. Cognac and Armagnac casks of substantial age carry rancio derived aldehydes, esters and the polyphenol fraction extracted from the original distillation through the previous maturation. These compounds combine with the Bourbon vanilla and whisky lactone framework to produce a layered finish profile that brandy cask whiskies are recognised for: stewed apricot, dried fig and a gentle drying spice.
