Description
Spirit Still Ltd operates as one of the smaller specialist German independent bottlers, producing single cask single malt releases for distribution through German speaking specialist whisky retail. The company sources casks from the broader Scotch single malt market and bottles under the SSL identity with simple naming conventions. This Arran 21 Year Old release captures spirit from the mid 1990s distillery inventory at the twenty one year cask point.
Spirit was matured for twenty one years in ex Bourbon American oak before being shipped to Spirit Still Ltd for bottling. The cask wood type follows the typical SSL selection template of refill or first fill Bourbon hogsheads selected for cask strength bottling. Bottled in 2018 at 49.6% with no chill filtration and no added colour, with the 49.6% strength representing controlled reduction from the natural cask strength toward the accessible 50% benchmark.
Twenty one years of ex Bourbon maturation produces deep cask integration, with vanillin, whisky lactones, the toasted sugar layer from American oak hemicellulose breakdown and the developing oxidative compounds well integrated against the underlying Arran spirit signature. The 49.6% bottling strength preserves the lipid fraction in solution while sitting just below the 50% benchmark that traditional non chill filtered single malt has typically used.
