Arnaud Lambert farms organically in the Loire and makes this Saumur-Champigny from Cabernet Franc. Young and fresh, it shows redcurrant and raspberry, a herbal edge and the chalk-driven freshness of the appellation.
Description
Arnaud Lambert is a family grower in the heart of the Loire, working around 30 hectares organically across the Saumur denomination. Clos Mazurique is a Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny, the area's benchmark red appellation. The vineyards sit on the local tuffeau, a soft chalky limestone that holds water through dry spells and lends Loire Cabernet Franc its characteristic freshness and fine, dusty tannin. Cabernet Franc ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and suits this cooler, northern climate, producing medium-bodied reds with bright acidity and a herbal, peppery character. This is the younger, fruit-forward style, made for freshness rather than long ageing, so the red fruit stays vivid and the tannins supple. The colour is a bright, deep red. The nose shows redcurrant, raspberry and a leafy, herbal note alongside cracked pepper and a touch of earth. The palate is fresh and medium bodied, the red fruit framed by crisp acidity and a fine tannin that keeps it lively to the close. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, and a light chill suits it in warm weather. It pairs with roast chicken, grilled beef and goats' cheese.
