Isaac Cantalapiedra makes Arenisca from Tinta de Toro, the local Tempranillo, in a fresher style than the region’s norm. Eleven months in barrel give a structured but bright red of dark plum, red berries and spice.
Description
Isaac Cantalapiedra makes Arenisca from Tinta de Toro, the thick-skinned local clone of Tempranillo, sourced from Castilla y León and bottled as VT Castilla-León. Toro is known for powerful, robust reds, but Cantalapiedra works the variety and terroir for freshness and agility, an uncommon approach in the region. The sandy soils that give the wine its name, arenisca being Spanish for sandstone, drain freely and reduce vigour, while the continental climate with hot days and cold nights builds colour and tannin while preserving acidity. The wine is aged eleven months in oak barrels, enough to round the tannins and add spice through slow oxygen exchange while keeping the fruit bright and the structure in check. The colour is deep and saturated. The nose shows dark plum and red berries with black pepper, liquorice and dried herbs. The palate is full bodied yet fresher than most Toro, with ripe tannin, lively acidity and a savoury, spicy finish. Serve at 17 degrees with grilled red meats, lamb and rich vegetable dishes.
