A 30 Year Old Spanish-style rum from Arehucas on Gran Canaria at 40 percent, soft and oak-driven with vanilla, caramel, honey and toasted wood plus a touch of orange and nuts, a pleasant, gentle sipper led more by oak than intensity.
Description
Arehucas Captain Kidd is a long-aged rum from the Canary Islands, a Gran Canaria molasses spirit distilled on a column still, matured in ex-bourbon oak and carrying a 30 year statement, bottled at a soft 40 percent. It comes from a distillery proud enough of this stock to keep it under lock and key, and it leans firmly into the gentle Spanish-influenced style.
Three decades in oak make their mark: toasted wood is prominent, framing vanilla, caramel and honey with a touch of orange and nuts. The wood is so dominant that it can mask the rest and leave the rum tasting lighter than its age suggests, and the soft strength keeps everything mellow and easy. It reads sweet and rounded, a pleasant after-dinner pour to share, though one defined more by its oak and its long maturation than by sheer depth.
