An 18 Year Old Canary Islands rum from Arehucas matured in sherry casks at 40%, honey, raisin and a strong, spicy sherry influence with cognac hints, a sweet but characterful old sipper that drinks bigger than its strength suggests.
Description
Anejo Seleccion Familiar is an eighteen year old rum from Arehucas, the long established distillery on Gran Canaria, matured in sherry casks and bottled at 40%. Arehucas works the Canary Islands cane tradition, and this older sherried expression is among its more serious offerings, with real depth for the strength.
The sherry cask sets the tone, the nose surprisingly strong and spicy on opening with honey, raisin, wood and a cognac like edge, then a palate that is sweet, honeyed and smooth before turning a touch sharper, with toffee through the middle and a drying, lightly bitter and woody finish. There is no firm word on added sugar, and the sweetness could be cask, dosage or both, so it is fairest to call it a sweeter, sherry led style. Even so, it carries genuine character and age, an underrated old island rum that delivers a lot of flavour at a gentle proof.
