Description
The Midgie is an Ardnamurchan series named for the peninsula's notorious summer biting insect, released in 2025 as the second batch in the line. Bottled at 48% ABV from a triple cask vatting of ex Bourbon, Port and Oloroso casks, this expression sits alongside the AD/ Core Range as a more wine forward release.
Both peated and unpeated production runs from the distillery's split regime feed this vatting. Concerto barley is milled into a copper topped semi lauter mash tun, fermented 72 to 120 hours in seven stainless steel washbacks on a single strain distiller's yeast, then double distilled through wash and spirit stills with reflux boil balls to a new make of 74 to 76% ABV. Spirit was filled at 63.5% and matured on site at Glenbeg in dunnage warehousing.
The triple cask approach layers three distinct wood interactions. Ex Bourbon American oak supplies the vanillin and oak lactone base of the profile. Port casks contribute red fruit character from anthocyanin pigments and residual port wine compounds, particularly the dried strawberry and plum register that sets Port apart from sherry. Oloroso adds the oxidative dried fruit and nutty notes from rancio chemistry. Peated phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol from St Fergus Highland peat at 30 to 35 ppm) from the peated portion of the split production carry as smoke that ties the wine forward fruit together.
