Released by Adelphi in 2018, Limited Release No. 03 is a 1 Year Old spirit drink from the Ardnamurchan distillery, bottled at 55.3% ABV from Oloroso sherry casks. As the spirit was under three years old at bottling, the regulations require it to be sold as spirit drink rather than Scotch whisky.
Production at Ardnamurchan starts with Concerto barley milled into a copper topped semi lauter mash tun, fermented 72 to 120 hours in seven stainless steel washbacks on a single strain distiller's yeast. Double distillation through two wash stills and two spirit stills with reflux boil balls reaches a new make of 74 to 76% ABV. Spirit was filled at 63.5% and matured on site in dunnage warehousing at Glenbeg.
At one year of cask interaction the wood contribution is in its early phase, with primary extract of vanillin and oak lactones forming but slow Maillard products and rancio depth still developing. The Oloroso fraction contributes dried fruit and oxidative notes from polyphenol oxidation during the sherry's prior cask life. With minimal cask masking, distillate character carries through cleanly, including the peated phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol from St Fergus Highland peat at 30 to 35 ppm) from the peated portion of the split production at near full intensity.
