An 18 year old single cask Ardmore released by Maltbarn in 2021 as the 195th cask in the bottler's numbered series, distilled in 2003 and matured exclusively in an Oloroso sherry cask. Maltbarn, operated by Martin Diebel out of Germany, has built one of the most respected small format indie programmes of the 2010s and 2020s, with numbered releases carrying a recognisable minimalist label aesthetic. The 2003 vintage falls in the early steam era at Kennethmont, the third year after the 2001 wash still heating conversion. 122 bottles for the global market.

Filled at 63.5% into a single Oloroso seasoned cask in 2003, the spirit matured at Kennethmont through the Allied Distillers, Fortune Brands and early Beam Global ownership periods. Eighteen years brought the strength to 51.9% naturally, with no chill filtration applied at bottling.

Long Oloroso maturation drives the dominant cask register. Polyphenol oxidation builds rancio depth, with melanoidins from the seasoning reading as walnut, fig and dark caramelised fruit. Eugenol and vanillin from the seasoned oak give clove and warm baking spice. Steam era Ardmore lacks the coal era Maillard register, leaving cleaner apple and pear esters from the Kerry yeast at the centre. The 12 to 14 ppm peat phenols fold into the wood derived intensity as dry leaf, heather smoke and a peat hearth note in the finish.
