Description
Cask #937 is one of three consecutive G&M 1996 Ardbeg releases, alongside #935 and #936, all bottled in 2005 under the Spirit of Scotland series. The three casks were filled consecutively in 1996, Ardbeg's final year of Allied Distillers ownership before the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition, and matured side by side in the Port Ellen warehouse before being drawn together for the 2005 release. The natural variation across the trio (53.1%, 54.7%, 52.9% ABV) demonstrates cask by cask microclimate differences.
Filled into refill American oak cask #937 in 1996 during Allied's final production year. Matured on Islay for nine years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2005 at 53.1% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. Sister casks #935 (52.9%) and #936 (54.7%) released in parallel from the same 2005 G&M batch.
Nine years of refill American oak interaction delivers spirit forward expression with developing wood interaction. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute emerging vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add background caramel. The 1996 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at peak concentrated intensity at this young age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers tropical fruit at peak expression.
