Description
The middle cask in Gordon & MacPhail's consecutive 1996 Ardbeg trio (#935, #936, #937), all bottled in 2005 under the Spirit of Scotland series. The 54.7% ABV reading on cask #936 marks the highest retained alcohol of the three sibling casks, indicating a cooler dunnage warehouse position with reduced ethanol attrition relative to sister casks #935 (52.9%) and #937 (53.1%). The 1996 vintage represents Ardbeg's final year of Allied Distillers ownership before the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition.
Filled into refill American oak cask #936 in 1996 during Allied's final production year. Matured on Islay for nine years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2005 at 54.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. Released through G&M's Spirit of Scotland series, one of the bottler's secondary single cask programmes.
Nine years of refill American oak interaction at retained high ABV intensifies compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) read sharply at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add caramel. The 1996 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at peak concentrated intensity at this young age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers tropical fruit at peak expression.
