Ardbeg 32 Years Old 1974 48%

A Swedish market 1974 single cask bottled in 2006 at the tail end of the major archive release programme. The 1974 vintage holds totem status in Ardbeg history because Glenmorangie chose it as the inaugural release after the 1997 acquisition, bottling it as Provenance in 1997 and 1998 to relaunch the brand. Over the subsequent decade the company released remaining 1974 casks individually to selected importers and markets, each carrying its own cask number and ABV signature.

Filled into a single refill American oak cask during the Hiram Walker years, matured on Islay for thirty two years through two mothball periods, and bottled in 2006 at natural strength of 48% ABV. Released without chill filtration or added colour, preserving the long chain fatty acid esters and phenolic acid load that builds across three decades.

Maturation chemistry at this age is dominated by oak lactones from American oak (cis isomer at saturation delivering coconut and oily vanilla) and by hemicellulose breakdown products including furfural and 5 methylfurfural giving roast caramel and almond skin. The 1974 peat character, originally around 50 ppm phenol in the malted barley, persists in mellowed form as guaiacol, 4 methylguaiacol and p cresol, with the harsh phenolic edge softened by slow oxidation. Esters from the Ardbeg purifier deliver tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, lemon zest) characteristic of long matured Ardbeg from this era.
