Ardbeg 25 Years Old (The Duchess)

Released through The Duchess Game & Wildlife series, a themed programme from the Dutch independent bottler. The Duchess operates from the Netherlands as a specialist single cask bottler channelling selected releases under themed sub series, with Game & Wildlife featuring distinctive wildlife imagery on each bottle. The bottler sits alongside Sansibar, Kirsch and Wiebers in the continental European specialist single cask ecosystem.

Matured for twenty five years and bottled in 2020 at 50.1% ABV for the Dutch market, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 50.1% reading after a quarter of a century sits at typical natural strength for refill American oak maturation in the maritime warehouse cycle, with steady ethanol attrition through the humid storage climate.

Twenty five years of refill American oak maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The mid 1990s era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative conversion across two and a half decades, shifting the smoke register toward leather, tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash.
