Ardbeg 20 Years Old 1991 Refill Hogshead 48.3% (Douglas Laing)

Released by Douglas Laing in November 2011 through the Old & Rare Platinum Selection, the bottler's premium single cask programme. Douglas Laing was established in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing and grew through the late twentieth century as a leading Scottish independent bottler under the Laing family ownership, before the 2013 split when Stewart Laing left to found Hunter Laing with sons Andrew and Scott.

Filled into a refill hogshead in 1991 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening period and matured for twenty years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in November 2011 at 48.3% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. Sister cask released the same month at 54.5% ABV, with the ABV split reflecting cask seal and warehouse position variation.

Twenty years of refill American oak maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1991 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative conversion emerging. At reduced ABV the polyphenols express more freely than at cask strength. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
