Description
Ian Macleod Distillers was founded in 1933 by Leonard James Russell, with the firm now controlled by the Russell family across multiple generations and operating the Glengoyne (acquired 2003) and Tamdhu (acquired 2011) distilleries alongside the long established Ian Macleod independent bottling programme. The Chieftain's Choice single cask range channels selected casks under the bottler's documented provenance, with cask numbers and specifications recorded on the label.
Filled into refill American oak cask #90542 in 1994 during Allied Distillers's final production years and matured on Islay for seventeen years across the 1996 final closure, the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition and the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2011 at 49.1% ABV for the German market, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Seventeen years of refill American oak maturation builds developed mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) carry strong intensity with moderate oxidative shift emerging. At reduced ABV the polyphenols and acid compounds express more freely. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated tropical fruit beneath the integrated phenolic core.
