Description
A German market exclusive Ardbeg from amontillado cask #2453, sister to two well documented casks from the same 2011 fill window: cask #2447 (the Feis Ile 2023 first fill amontillado at 637 bottles) and cask #2464 (the Swedish market 1st fill manzanilla at 624 bottles). The three casks were filled within days of each other in August and September 2011 and released across 2023 to different markets.
Filled on 31 August 2011 into an amontillado sherry cask and matured on Islay for twelve years before bottling on 19 October 2023 at 58.3% ABV. Non chill filtered with no added colour, 638 bottles drawn at natural strength. The 58.3% reading is marginally higher than sister cask #2447 (58.2%) despite longer maturation, indicating subtle differences in cask seal and warehouse microclimate even between casks filled the same day.
Amontillado is the secondary sherry style produced when fino loses its flor yeast and continues ageing oxidatively, creating a chemistry between fino and oloroso. Twelve years in this cask format contributes polyphenols from Spanish oak (gallic acid, ellagic acid), melanoidins from Maillard browning, and acetaldehyde and sotolon from oxidative ageing. Modern Ardbeg's 50 to 55 ppm peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol) layer onto the sherry chemistry, shifting the smoke register toward salted almond, polished leather and bitter orange. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists beneath as concentrated citrus.
