Description
A German market exclusive Ardbeg from the 2007 distillation cohort, released through the Distillery Single Cask programme. 2007 is a notable year in Ardbeg's modern history: Mickey Heads took over as distillery manager on 12 March 2007, succeeding Stuart Thomson who had managed the site since the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition. Heads, an Islay native who had previously worked at the distillery and then managed Jura, would lead Ardbeg through the expansion years until his 2020 retirement.
Matured on Islay for twelve years from 2007 under LVMH owned Glenmorangie. Bottled in 2019 at 56% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 56% reading after twelve years represents typical natural strength for an Ardbeg refill bourbon cask, with steady ethanol attrition through the humid maritime warehouse cycle.
Twelve years of American oak maturation places this release in the early mid age expression of the modern Ardbeg curve. Cis and trans oak lactones build coconut and oiled wood at developing concentration, while hemicellulose breakdown adds emerging caramel and almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde deliver vanilla and baking spice. The modern 50 to 55 ppm phenol load reads at full intensity (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol), and the Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the phenolic core, the distillery's spirit still architecture at its modern stable expression.
