Description
An SMWS Ardbeg from the 2007 distillation cohort, the year Mickey Heads took over as distillery manager in March, succeeding Stuart Thomson who had managed the site since the 1997 Glenmorangie acquisition. The 61.3% retained ABV at 12 years places this in the high cask strength bracket for the SMWS Ardbeg programme, indicating a tightly sealed cask with limited ethanol attrition. The Society's house style of evocative tasting note titles continues with 'You Would Not Believe!' as the 139th Ardbeg release in the running sequence.
Filled into first fill bourbon barrel in 2007 during the modern Glenmorangie era at Ardbeg. Matured on Islay for twelve years under LVMH ownership. Bottled in 2020 at 61.3% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 61.3% reading after twelve years is high cask strength even for a younger Ardbeg, suggesting a cool warehouse position.
Twelve years of first fill American oak interaction at retained high ABV intensifies extraction compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) read sharply, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add emerging caramel. The modern Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at concentrated intensity. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit at peak expression.
