Description
An SMWS Ardbeg release at code 33.104, the one hundred and fourth Society bottling of the distillery since the programme began in 1983. SMWS distillery codes assign each Scotch distillery a unique number (Ardbeg = 33), with the decimal suffix marking the sequential Society release. The Society's quirky tasting note titles (here 'An Algerian Cafe') replace conventional tasting descriptors on the label, building the SMWS house style across decades of releases.
Filled into refill American oak cask in 1999, the second full year of Glenmorangie owned production at Ardbeg. Matured on Islay for eleven years across the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2011 at 55.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour.
Eleven years of refill American oak interaction builds early mid age expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add emerging caramel. The modern Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at near full intensity at this young age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers concentrated pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit beneath the phenolic core.
