The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was founded in 1983 in Edinburgh by Pip Hills, growing from a private cask sharing scheme into a global membership organisation with specialist venues across Edinburgh, London, Glasgow and international cities. SMWS operates a single cask programme using anonymised distillery codes (33 for Ardbeg), with each bottle identified by code, cask sequence number and quirky tasting note title rather than distillery name on the label.

Filled into refill American oak cask in 1999, the second full year of Glenmorangie owned production at Ardbeg. Matured on Islay for ten years across the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2009 at 56.7% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 56.7% reading after ten years sits in typical range for refill bourbon maturation.

Ten years of refill American oak interaction delivers spirit forward expression with developing wood interaction. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde contribute emerging vanilla and baking spice, and hemicellulose furans add background caramel. The modern Glenmorangie spec peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at peak concentrated intensity at this young age. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature delivers pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit at peak expression.
