Description
Adelphi has a long history reaching back to the original Adelphi distillery, which operated in Glasgow from 1826 to 1907 before closing in the early twentieth century. The brand was relaunched in 1993 by Jamie Walker as an independent bottler, sourcing single casks from across the Scottish distillery estate. The modern Adelphi later acquired the Ardnamurchan distillery in 2014, but its single cask programme remains the foundation of the bottler's identity.
Filled into refill American oak cask #1979 in 1998, the first full year of Glenmorangie owned production at Ardbeg following the June 1997 acquisition from Allied Distillers. Matured on Islay for ten years across the 2004 LVMH purchase. Bottled in 2009 at 58.8% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 1998 vintage carries the modern Glenmorangie spec peating profile at 50 to 55 ppm phenol.
Ten years of refill American oak interaction delivers early mid age expression with retained high ABV intensifying compound expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) build at moderate concentration, hemicellulose furans deliver emerging caramel and almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The modern Glenmorangie peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) read at concentrated intensity, delivering classic Ardbeg phenolic smoke. The purifier ester signature delivers pineapple, lemon and tropical fruit at peak expression.
