An experimental Ardbeg from the early Glenmorangie era. The 1998 spirit was filled into a new toasted American oak hogshead, virgin wood normally reserved for American bourbon and Tennessee whiskey production rather than Scotch single malt. Cask #1189 is the sister cask of #1190, both filled on 11 May 1998 and both released for Feis Ile 2009, making this an unusually well documented pair of experimental fills.

Filled on 11 May 1998 and bottled on 10 December 2008 at ten years, natural cask strength 54% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour, 252 bottles drawn at the distillery. New oak toasting differs from charring by applying lower temperatures (around 200°C versus 400°C plus for char), breaking down hemicellulose and lignin without forming a carbon layer. No previous spirit fill means maximum extraction directly into the Ardbeg distillate.

Virgin toasted oak delivers intense lactone loading (cis and trans isomers of beta methyl gamma octalactone at high concentration) for heavy coconut and oiled wood, alongside lignin derived vanillin and syringaldehyde for saturated vanilla and baking spice. Hemicellulose breakdown furans (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) add caramel and almond at intensity not seen in refill casks. The modern Glenmorangie peat phenols read through the heavy oak as guaiacol smoke and tarred rope, with the Ardbeg purifier ester signature giving pineapple, lemon and pine resin layered against the unmistakable toasted oak base.
