Description
Distilled in 1995 at Appleton Estate in Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, this Hearts Collection release was matured for 25 years entirely in Jamaica’s tropical climate before bottling in 2020. The rum never left the distillery’s control during its ageing life and underwent no secondary maturation or continental ageing.
The Hearts Collection focuses on single vintage pot still distillates taken exclusively from the heart of the run. These rums contain no column still spirit, no additives and no post maturation manipulation. Each release is intended to present a precise snapshot of Appleton Estate rum at a specific point in time, shaped solely by distillation style, climate and duration of ageing.
Within the Hearts Collection, the 1995 vintage is notable for its exceptionally high total congener concentration, reported at approximately 1,440 g per hL AA. This places it firmly in heavy Jamaican pot still territory and significantly above other vintages in the series. That elevated congener level directly influences the rum’s weight, intensity and aromatic density, particularly when combined with long tropical ageing.
On the nose, the profile is deep and assertive, showing tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, vanilla and seasoned oak. The palate is firm and structured, delivering roasted coffee, dried fruit, bitter cocoa and pronounced wood influence. The finish is long, dry and tannic, with oak and bitterness lingering well after the sip.
This is a technically demanding rum that rewards time and attention. It clearly demonstrates how pot still distillation, extended tropical maturation and high congener concentration intersect when nothing is softened, diluted or corrected.
