Description
Distilled in 2003 at Appleton Estate in Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, this Hearts Collection release was aged entirely in Jamaica’s tropical climate for 18 years before being bottled in 2021. No secondary maturation or continental ageing was used. This is full tropical ageing from distillation to bottling.
As with all Hearts Collection releases, only the heart of the pot still distillation was selected. The rum contains no column still spirit, no additives and no post ageing manipulation. It remained under Appleton Estate’s control throughout its life, which sets it apart from many independent bottlings that ship casks abroad for further ageing.
The 2003 vintage has a reported total congener level of approximately 588 g per hL AA, similar on paper to the 1984 but expressed very differently in the glass due to age and maturity. At 18 years, the congeners remain more vibrant and fruit driven, with less oxidative dominance from wood.
On the nose, the rum shows ripe tropical fruit, orange peel, vanilla, warm oak and soft herbal notes. The palate is powerful and structured, delivering baked fruit, spice, cocoa and toasted wood with a clear bittersweet edge. The finish is long, dry and spicy, retaining freshness despite its strength.
Bottled at 63 percent ABV, this expression offers a clear demonstration of how tropical ageing shapes Jamaican pot still rum at an earlier stage, balancing intensity with energy and lift.
