Description
Aphros Wines makes this single-variety Loureiro in the DOC Vinho Verde, in the Minho in Portugal's green northwest. The vineyards sit on gentle slopes facing the Lima river, farmed organically and biodynamically, with good sun exposure balanced by the cooling Atlantic breeze, which together with the cool, damp climate gives the high natural acidity that defines the region. The grapes are macerated on their skins, then pressed and decanted, so the juice picks up colour, light phenolic texture and a gentle grip while keeping Loureiro's aromatic freshness. The brief skin contact, rather than a long oxidative maceration, is what keeps this on the zesty, fragrant side of orange wine. The colour is pale amber. The nose opens with lime and orange zest, white flowers and green apple, with a mineral, faintly earthy note true to the source. The palate is fresh and dry, the bright acidity framed by a light skin grip, finishing crisp, citrussy and stony. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
