Description
Aphros Phaunus Amphora Loureiro comes from Vasco Croft's Aphros Wines in the Vinho Verde region of Minho, in north-west Portugal. The Loureiro grows on granitic soils, which drain freely and lend the wine a firm acid spine and a fine mineral cut, while the cool, damp Atlantic climate keeps the fruit fresh. Croft farms biodynamically, and the wine is made with minimal intervention. After a native yeast ferment, the must macerates on its skins for three months in clay amphoras. The extended skin contact extracts phenolics and tannin that give the wine grip and texture far beyond a standard white Loureiro, while the unlined clay allows slow oxygen exchange that adds a savoury, slightly oxidative depth. The colour is golden amber. The nose shows white peach, orange peel, beeswax and dried herbs, with a chamomile lift. The palate is dry and textured, the granite-driven acidity holding the skin grip and waxy fruit through to an earthy, herbal finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a wide glass.
