Martín Códax makes Anxo Martín in D.O. Ribeiro, inland Galicia, from a blend of Albariño, Godello and Treixadura. Fermented in stainless steel and rested five months on its lees, it is fresh and aromatic, with white peach, citrus and a saline, mineral edge.
Description
Anxo Martín is an Atlantic white made by Martín Códax in D.O. Ribeiro, the inland Galician appellation set along the Miño river valley in Spain's cool, rainy northwest. It blends three local grapes: Albariño for aromatics and grip, Godello for texture and body, and Treixadura for weight and orchard fruit. The region's granite and sandy soils and its damp, temperate climate give whites with bright natural acidity and a mineral undertow. Fermentation is in stainless steel to preserve freshness, after which the wine spends five months on its fine lees. That lees contact releases mannoproteins that build a rounder mid palate and add a subtle bready depth without masking the fruit. The wine shows a pale straw colour with green tints, and a nose of white peach, lemon, pear and white flowers. The palate is dry and precise, with a citrus line, a gentle creamy weight from the lees and a saline finish that reflects the Atlantic setting. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a natural partner for the seafood of Galicia, from clams and mussels to grilled fish, and works equally with lighter salads and fresh cheeses.
