This Dão red comes from around fifty year old vines on granite soils in the Serra da Estrela, planted at roughly 450 metres. António Madeira blends Baga, Jaen, Tinta Amarela and other local varieties, farmed biodynamically, for a fresh, light bodied red with red fruit, herbs and a mineral edge.
Description
Vinhas Velhas Tinto is António Madeira's old vine cuvée from the Dão in Beiras, Portugal. The fruit comes from vineyards of around fifty year old vines planted at roughly 450 metres in the Serra da Estrela on predominantly granite soils, plots that were abandoned and then rescued and are now farmed biodynamically. Old vines naturally yield small crops of concentrated, balanced fruit, while the granite soils and the cool, high altitude climate hold acidity and give a fine, mineral structure. The blend draws on Baga, Jaen, Tinta Amarela and other local varieties, with Baga in particular bringing firm acidity and grip. Native yeast fermentation and eighteen months in French oak barrels integrate the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange while keeping the wine fresh and low in alcohol at 12.5 percent. The colour is bright, light red. The nose shows red berries and redcurrant with dried herbs, black pepper, a minty lift and a clear granite minerality. The palate is light to medium bodied and lively, with fine tannins, high acidity and a long, savoury, stony finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It pairs well with game birds, lamb and mushroom dishes.
